How has the use of this innovation changed over time

It let people talk to other people almost instantly. This is far different than before the invention because the only way you could talk to someone before was face to face. With a phone you get an idea of what someone sounds like, the inflection in their voice, etc. With a telegraph you could only send out signals that would be decoded into words. Before these methods most people only had the chance to converse with people in their immediate area because many people never traveled far from home all their lives.
